It is the journey this blog takes me on, through my love of all things design and travel, that keeps me going and inspired. And of course key to any great trip, is the people you meet along the way.
My recent post on Stitch Rugs led me to the work of designer Bouchra Boudoua, whose ceramics I have been coveting on Instagram for a while. I love her bold brushmarks that feel so contemporary, yet clearly references her Moroccan roots.
#1 TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK
My name is Bouchra Boudoua, I live and work between Casablanca and
Marrakech. I studied Interior Design at Central St. Martins in London and
ever since moving back to Morocco 5 years ago I’ve been exploring craft and
design in the red city. I started ceramics out of curiosity two years ago
and have been drawn magnetically to this art since then. At the moment I
take on interior design projects while simultaneously producing small
ceramic collections in collaboration with local artisans.
#2 WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS?
The inspiration behind my work is a combination from my childhood, my
origins, and my current environment. Most importantly I’m inspired by the
simple, authentic, lifestyle one can find in some rural areas of Morocco. I
find in clay the same humbling and gratifying feelings I get from my
travels in the south of Morocco.
#3 WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR YOU?
I really enjoy painting and decorating ceramics while testing new
techniques. I equally enjoy the human aspect of the design process
especially when exchanging ideas and discussing techniques with local
artisans. It always starts out as very technical conversations which
gradually become conversations about personal stories, work, and life in
general.
#4 DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DESIGN?
If I had to choose, I think I’d choose the fruit plate which I’ve done in
several different patterns. I like that it is the combination of two
natural materials (clay and rattan) in one piece. Its definitely something
I’d like to test more of in the future.
#5 PLANS & DREAMS FOR 2018?
So many plans and dreams in my head as always.
Most importantly, continue
doing what I love.
#6 WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR DESIGNS?
My products can be found at 33 Rue Majorelle in Marrakech, Bee on 6th
in Rabat, La Fabrique and Bazar Chic in Casablanca. They will also be
available online very shortly!
#7 AND FINALLY – YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR COFFEE (OR TEA)!?
It’s a bit far but I’d say le Relais du Lac in Lalla Takerkoust. Its a few
kilometres away from the city and you are completely surrounded by
beautiful natural scenery.
