YUMELLO #MeetTheMaker

I first met Omar at a market in Bristol and I couldn’t resist buying a jar of Amlou – which was soon devoured at home.
I love how they have taken their inspiration from a product steeped in tradition and history and have transformed it into something contemporary – and of course tasty – for our tables here in the UK.
#1 TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELVES AND YOUR WORK
We are Esther and Omar. Having moved to Bristol in 2016 from our native Morocco we found that we were
missing amlou so badly. Amlou is the traditional spread of the Berber Atlas Mountains – a rich stone-milled
blend of roasted nuts and delicious cold-pressed argan oil. It is similar to nut butter, but with a much more
intense flavour and nutritional goodness, as it’s minimally processed and blended with antioxidant-packed
argan oil. We set out to change that and created our own range of amlou true to Berber tradition.
That’s how Yumello was born. We sold our first jar at the Tobacco Factory Market in south Bristol in
January 2017, and now you can find Yumello in Harvey Nichols, Revital and many other stores.
We handcraft our products in small batches in Bristol and work closely with our partners to ensure our food
is ethically and sustainably sourced.
#2 WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YUMELLO?
You can draw inspiration from many different
avenues of life in the Atlas Mountains, and the simplicity and purity of food is definitely one of them. The
inspiration for Yumello came from our childhood growing up in the Atlas Mountains. We would experience
all of the colourful aromas and tastes of simple yet amazingly delicious Berber food. We will never forget
sitting under the argan trees, sipping mint tea and dipping freshly baked bread into amlou with views of the
Mountains. We were convinced we had to share this delicious superfood with the world.
#3 WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE PROCESS FOR YOU?
The people you meet along the way – the
lovely people that believe in our dream, give us all their support and love what we have created as much as
we do.
#4 PLANS & DREAMS FOR 2018?
Being an entrepreneur and achieving the balance between
professional and personal life can be difficult. One of our plans for 2018 is to be fully present in every
moment and spend more time with the people we care about.
images via
#5 WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR PRODUCTS?
Yumello is available to buy now on our website,
Revital stores, EAT17, Harvey Nichols and many independent stores.
#6 AND FINALLY – YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR COFFEE (OR TEA)!!
image via
One of our favourite places for
tea (coffee or anything really!) is Boston Tea Party. Their selection of loose leaf tea is top quality – our
favourite is the ginger, rose and cardamom blend (tastes as good as it sounds!).

Tamegroute is both a place and a process - the alchemy from the earth in this small village on the edge of the Sahara produces the distinctive Tamegroute pottery - on the blog today and where to find it online via @helplocalwithlove who are providing an online platform for artisans who have been cut off from the tourist market this past year - link in bio #tamegroute #handmade #ethicalshopping #madeinmorocco

Fitting perfectly into this week's monochrome mood is one of my favourite houses in the medina of Assilah - Dar Ka has been sympathetically renovated in the tradition of a riad but also has a very clean contemporary feel about it - this roof terrace is the perfect spot for a cold glass of wine and a sunset - AND a little bird has told me it's on the market 💙SO if you are looking for a place to retreat to and call your own in the wonderful seaside Medina of Assilah message me for more info.

Carrying on with the monochromatic train of thought...I had to include some images of interiors by fashion designer Marlene Birger who - as far as I am concerned - has perfected the layered Moroccan inspired monochrome interior. Her interiors manage to be full of detail yet the pared down palette makes it restful, but never dull!!! Layers of textiles include Beni ouarain carpets and vintage handira - it's all about pattern and texture! 🖤link in bio
