5 things about Tangier with writer Stéphanie Gaou

Writer Stéphanie Gaou is the force and inspiration behind Les Insolites in Tangier – Les Insolites translates directly as “the unusual” and with this in mind it is so much more than a bookshop . . . it is an art gallery, a bookshop for both adults and children, a place to stock up on beautiful stationary, all with a cup of coffee and a place to sit in the Tangier sunshine.
I asked Stéphanie to share with us her 5 favourite things about living in Tangier, and she transports us out of the city into the natural beauty that surrounds Tangier and which often goes undiscovered by visitors.
I have tried to keep my translation short and sweet and let her words speak for themselves!
#1: Collecting Ear of Venus shells on the edge of the Atlantic.
They say they bring happiness to those who collect them – either way, they are beautiful with one amber side and another that winds in an arabesesque.
*
#2: Faire de longues ballades près de Slokia
#2: Take long walks near Slokia
Behind the hills of Cap Spartel is a lovely walk through the countryside where you will meet both the local farmers and their goats and cows, sheep and donkeys. Perfect in January and February to pick some Mimosa and pine cones for a warming fire. The view is breathtaking and admiring the ballet of ships is a delight.
*
#3: Discover the beautiful creations of the rattan artisans
Made in Tanja.
adresse indispensable.
These artisans were for a long time based in the Charf district of Tangier, but with the recent development of the LGV train they were moved to premises that are far less accessible. The objects the design and manufacture are a delight and 100% Made in Tanja! I go there every few months and each time I find a basket for summer, a kitsch fur covered bench, a  coat rack or one of so many other items. An indespensible address!
(these artisans are now in the Tanja Balia district not far from residential complex La perle du Détroit)

Each notebook created by Luis is entirely handmade and unique. He collects old papers, movie posters and programs, old books etc which he connects through the pages. Different covers are made using leather, handpainted paper and all are treasures of the imagination. Each creation is is part of an exclusive series of 15 notebooks that are replaced by the following collection. I have one for each of my destinations, or to take notes, I ‘m completely addicted to his notebooks which can also be custom made.

#5: Rester chez moi et lire ou écrire
#5: Spend time at home to read or write
One of my favourite moments in my busy schedule is being able to stay at home, read good books, or flip through a magazine. Everything is inspiring: the colour of a wall, a terrace in Italy, a hotel in Palermo. They all give me new ideas for the bookshop. In summer I love going to the beach, but as soon as winter comes I take refuge in my home and catch up on my reading and prepare for new meetings and exhibitions for the book shop.  As soon as I can I am also trying to make some time to write my next book.

This is a little note of appreciation to the artists who, come rain and shine, share their creativity with all who pass by in the medina - and it is also a little request to all those who pass through...when possible take the time to appreciate, engage and maybe even buy a work of art to slip inside your suitcase and remind you of your travels. It will be appreciated - and will also be more helpful than being simply another image on our collective instagram feeds!!! And yes...that painting by Mustapha is now on my wall #artistsofassilah #artistsofmorocco #shoplocal

It's Friday - so appropriately ending a week of food posts with a fabulous bowl of couscous.
