Despite spending a fair amount of time in shops and souks when I am in Morocco, I don’t buy a lot for myself.
But when I was perusing the racks of inspired Laure Welfling creations in the Gallery on the Place de la Kasbah in Tangier these shoes caught my eye . . . I love the fabric!
Coincidentally – feeling a bit like cinderella – they were a perfect fit, and the next thing I knew the credit card machine was in motion and I was sashaying out with some fabulous new shoes!
I was interested to find out a little more about my new Djebeli shoes and as a result met the trio of Welfling siblings – Orphee, India & Nil – who make up the creative energy behind Djebeli designs.
#1 TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK
Orphée, Nil and India – the 3 oldest of a family of 5, where everybody,
especially our parents ( LAURE WELFLING and GUIDI) creates.
We had the luck of discovering Morocco as children and fall in love with
its culture. Thanks to our parents who created the eponymous studio as well
as the Gallery LAURE WELFLING we were able to see first the works of the
Maalems of Morocco , their talents, traditions and richness.
We did our first collection of textile design 2 and half years ago with the
master weaver Amine Bakali. It was a fantastic way to start. Since then we
aim to find or design great fabric to create with. All our creations are
handmade.
#2 WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS?
Our travels.
#3 WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR YOU?
They are many interesting aspects. Imagining an idea, the process of
creating it with our talented craftsmen, the finished product being seen
for the first time…
#4 DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DESIGN?
No favorite. We are at the moment working on our new babouches ( slippers)
and bags in Fes and are really happy about the results.
#5 PLANS & DREAMS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD?
Keep on with the good work, discover more techniques. We are also preparing
some really cool collaborations this year.
#6 WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR DESIGNS?
We sell online
we are in Laure’s Welfling Gallery as well
as Las Chicas in Tangier , in Paris, Japan and soon HG.
#7 AND FINALLY – YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE FOR COFFEE (OR TEA) IN TANGIER!!
Café Hafa!
