Getting a book like this {TANGIER: Facets of a Mediterranean Intersection} in the post under current Covid circumstances felt like I was meeting new people and visiting familiar places all at once.
The introduction states “Tangier is a mood . . . how do you photograph a mood”
and then goes on to do just that!
Facets of Tangier is both a travelling exhibition and a publication that is part of an educational programme developed from an idea conceived by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra – a creative platform that draws on the rich musical heritage of Al-Andalus, intertwining it with modern strands. There is a planned exhibition and book launch for Tangier but understandably these plans are all on hold for now.
But at some point life will resume, the galleries will open, and the musicians will make music for us again.
Written in English, Dutch and Arabic, the words, along with the images give you an insight into Tangier – what it is that defines the city and its people and what makes it different from other Moroccan cities. I particuarly like this explanation in the introduction quoting Moroccan author Tahar Ben Jelloun:
“At the top of Africa, with a view of Europe, its back to the desert and its toes in the sea”
The book captures many of the facets that make up Tangier – the beautiful, the evocative as well as the more gritty day to day reality of living in a big city.
If you have time – and lets face it you probably do right now! – scroll down on the website and have a look at the interactive map there.
You can explore Tangier via the photographic locations of the images in the book.
I’m looking forward to this exhibition and will let you know more as soon as dates can be confirmed.
