This post is a little off piste on the surface, but if you follow me on instagram you might have noticed my strap line:
“South African living between Wales, Morocco & the Philippines – notconfused at all!”
This post is a little taste of the Filipino side of our lives.
While Manila is crazy busy and congested, it doesnt take too long to get out of town and onto the beaches.
Anilao (Batangus) is one of my favourite spots to escape the city and humidity and simply breathe.
Kamalig is a property we were lucky enough to enjoy on my last visit and my days where pretty much spent swimming, sunning and reading – although if you need a little more action on your holiday this spot is in the middle of a marine reserve and is perfect for diving, kayaking and other water sports.
If you prefer staying on dry land, there are also some great bike trails right on the doorstep.
I grew up in Durban in South Africa so the tropical plants make me feel right at home – although I must admit that they do seem a little bigger and brighter in this part of the world – walking around the huge garden of Kamalig you get the feeling that the jungle foliage could, within minutes, wrap its tendrils around the trees and take back the land.
But for now the manicured lawns surround the beautiful individual cottages and roll down right to the edge of the ocean.
Perfect to pop on those goggles and go for an early morning snorkel.
This place is perfect for a lovely big family holiday (thats my plan) with everyone having their own little cottage and then a wonderfully social big open plan and open to the elements kitchen and dining space.
It brings new meaning to indoor/outdoor space!
The design of the house is based on an interpretation of the traditional Filipino house with the high pitch roof perfect for ventilation on hot summer nights. Kamalig is actually Tagalog for a barn – a place to tradtionally store grain and farm tools – here in this lovely coastal retreat Kamalig has become a place of relaxation and a time to regroup.
And once you have spent the day biking, hiking, diving and boating . . . simply sit back and enjoy the sunset!
