Dreaming of Kamalig

This post is a little off piste on the surface, but if you follow me on instagram you might have noticed my strap line:

“South African living between Wales, Morocco & the Philippines – notconfused at all!”

This post is a little taste of the Filipino side of our lives.

While Manila is crazy busy and congested, it doesnt take too long to get out of town and onto the beaches.

Anilao (Batangus) is one of my favourite spots to escape the city and humidity and simply breathe.

Kamalig is a property we were lucky enough to enjoy  on my last visit and my days where pretty much spent swimming, sunning and reading  – although if you need a little more action on your holiday this spot is in the middle of a marine reserve and is  perfect for diving, kayaking and other water sports.

If you prefer staying on dry land, there are also some great bike trails right on the doorstep.

I grew up in Durban in South Africa so the tropical plants make me feel right at home – although I must admit that they do seem a little bigger and brighter in this part of the world – walking around the huge garden of Kamalig you get the feeling that the jungle foliage could, within minutes, wrap its tendrils around the trees and take back the land.

But for now the manicured lawns surround the beautiful individual cottages and roll down right to the edge of the ocean.

Perfect to  pop on those goggles and go for an early morning snorkel.

This place is perfect for a lovely big family holiday (thats my plan) with everyone having their own little cottage and then a wonderfully social big open plan and open to the elements kitchen and dining space.

It brings new meaning to indoor/outdoor space!

The design of the house is based on an interpretation of the traditional Filipino house with the high pitch roof perfect for ventilation on hot summer nights. Kamalig is actually Tagalog for a barn – a place to tradtionally store grain and farm tools – here in this lovely coastal retreat Kamalig has become a place of relaxation and a time to regroup.

And once you have spent the day biking, hiking, diving and boating . . . simply sit back and enjoy the sunset!

Contact me HERE if you want more information about booking a tropical holiday at KAMALIG.

I spent some time last week wondering around @hix_event for @hoteldesigns - it was lovely to be back in London at a trade show and be able to have a look at the designs and listen to the debates - here are a few of the things that caught my eye...follow the link in my bio to the post on @hoteldesigns to read more about the conversations that were being had about the direction of design in the hospitality sector - but back to the images - this couch from @carlhansenandson was beautiful in design and detail - inspired wall coverings by @arte - going back to my textile roots I loved the printed velvets by @ilivfabrics - the sculptural lampshade by @omio.ad and finally ending with the poignant quote by #harukimurakami in the installation by #areendesign - and that barely scratched the surface....#hix2021

Every plate tells a story...I posted about my review of my time spent @qdlresort earlier this week - but for me it's always the details...aside from the fabulous food at @casavelhaqdl the attention to detail and presentation was what blew me away - every one of these plates/dishes/bowls is embedded in the area and tells a story - elevating the experience! #foodstories #farmtotable #artisanal LINK in bio.

The last posts I did on this page where from a few days spent in Portugal - aside from enjoying the sunshine, dabbling in a bit of yoga and eating a ridiculous amount of incredible food...I was actually working!
