I love seeing where the creative energy of people and places takes them, and Wak Wak Studio is a fresh and energetic collaboration finding its place in Tangier. The talent behind the label are designers Sarah and Zineb. Both were working in different creative fields – Sarah is a ceramicist and designer of the Ewwel range which has featured in these pages HERE, while Zineb was a Floral Designer before moving into the realm of fashion.
#1 TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK
Zineb is originally from Casablanca but she fell in love with the city of Tangier and decided to move while at the same time made the move from Floral Designer to Fashion. Sarah, originally from Paris , moved to Morocco with her family five years ago where she has been creating and developing the Ewwel range of ceramics, taking the skills and motifs of the local crafts as her inspiration.
“Our creativity and love of fashion meant that we clicked immediately when we met, and when we discovered that we both had a childhood dream of having our own range of clothing, it made sense to work together to pursue this idea. We both have young children so used this as our inspiration and the starting point for this adventure together.”
Wak Wak is an Arabic expression that means surprise, astonishment, or a call for help, and is an expression generally used by women.
#2 WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS?
Our inspiration comes mainly from our life here and our love of this city. Tangier has both a bohemian and a more natural side to it, and we draw our inspiration from both these elements. Our love of fashion and design has lead us to combine the knowledge and craft of Moroccan artisans with contemporary elements of current Parisian fashion and design trends. We hope this comes across in our Wak Wak Studio.
#3 WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR YOU?
The most exciting part for us is when we actually get to create our designs. When we are able to bring to life the mix of colour, fabric and pattern ending up with the finished product that has the Wak Wak signature.
#4 DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DESIGN?
One of our favourites is definitely the LEO coat!
#5 PLANS & DREAMS FOR 2018?
We hope to launch a Mother/Daughter capsule collection this year which we would love to see distributed across Europe as well as in Morocco
